Dijon, Burgundy (Issuewire.com)  - Chew on this: Snail burgers will soon be crawling into American restaurants and homes if a man in Paris, Arkansas, has his way. Richard H. Davis is currently importing a French brand of snail patties called "L'Escargot" in hopes of getting American gourmets to shell out $12 for a four-pack. The thought of eating snail burgers may gross you out, but Davis says folks who  munched the slug patties without knowing what they were compared them to mushroom burgers and awarded high marks.

Still, Davis admits convincing Americans to replace Big Macs with snail burgers won't be easy and plans to go at a snail's pace by introducing them to restaurant chefs first and slowly moving them into grocery stores. In addition, Escargots can be hard to get a handle on when eating them, as fictionalized by Julia Roberts' character in 'Pretty Woman,' who accidentally flings one across a fancy French restaurant in Beverly Hills, California. Ordering, a Snail Burger would have solved this embarrassing moment in the film. Pretty Woman received mixed reviews, though Roberts received a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress for her “Happy Hooker” performance. No need to watch the sexy movie, dining on the delicious mollusks have long been considered by the French to be an effective aphrodisiac.

Escargots are one of the most sought after culinary delights in France, famous for their distinctive earthy flavor and silky texture. The best escargot is not just a dish but an experience, which requires a distinctive fork and a platter designed specifically to hold the cooked snails. Escargots are deeply entwined with France’s gastronomic history. L'Escargot Snail Burger patties are made from French Burgundy snails. The scientific name of the Burgundy snail is Helix Pomatia. However, due to the snails' slow reproductive cycle and over-consumption have led to the species becoming rare and quite expensive. Thus, since 1979, they have been subject to special snail protection laws. Wild harvesting is therefore prohibited in France during their breeding period from 1 April to 30 June.
